Post Offices Open Late/Until Midnight on Tax Day?

Is your local Post Office open late on Tax Day? Does the Post Office offer extended hours and/or a midnight pickup on Tax Day? Don’t count on it!

Gone are the days when workers stood outside Post Offices with mail sacks, collecting last-minute tax returns up to the 12:00AM midnight Tax Day deadline. This year, many Post Offices have normal hours of operation.

According to the IRS, most taxpayers now file their returns electronically. So, there isn’t nearly as big of a need for Post Offices to stay open late on Tax Day as there used to be. Factor in the recent budget-cutting measures which are closing locations and cutting hours and you can understand why most Post Offices are no longer open late or until midnight on Tax Day.

Best advice? File your tax return electronically. If that’s not possible, be sure to get to the Post Office during their regular business hours. If all else fails and you’re not going to make it by closing time, search online for a Post Office that has extended hours. Some Post Offices are still open late on Tax Day, but that number drops every year.

Be sure not to miss that deadline! When you have finished and filed your taxes, be sure to take advantage of the Tax Day freebies and special deals being offered by stores and restaurants. You’ll find them all right here on

What’s Open & Closed on Easter Sunday

Wondering what is open and what is closed on Easter Sunday? You’re not alone! Used to be, almost everything besides churches, convenience stores, and gas stations was closed on Easter. Today, some businesses are open while others remain closed for the holiday. Here’s a quick list of what is open and closed:

Because Easter falls on a Sunday, government offices will be closed. This includes federal, state, county, and city offices. Post Offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered. Public buildings such as libraries are likely closed as well.

Banks will be closed.

Stock markets will be closed.

Schools will be closed. This includes primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities.

Most shopping malls and shopping centers will be closed. This includes the anchor stores typically found in malls: Belk, Bergners, Bloomingdale’s, Bon-Ton, Boscov’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard’s, Elder-Beerman, Gordmans, Herberger’s, JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Younkers. Sears stores with separate outside entrances may be open.

These supermarkets and grocery stores will be open, running on holiday schedule with reduced hours in most cases: Albertsons, Baker’s, BI-LO, Carrs, Cashwise/Coborn’s, Dillons, Food4Less, Food City, Food Lion, Fry’s, Genuardi’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Hornbacher’s, Hy-Vee, Ingles, Jewel-Osco, King Soopers, Kroger, Meijer, Owens, QFC, Raley’s, Ralphs, Randalls, Safeway, Save-a-Lot, Shaw’s/Star Market, Sweetbay, Vons, Winn-Dixie.

These grocers will be closed at most locations: A&P, ALDI, Cub Foods, Fred Meyer, Giant Eagle, H-E-B, Publix.

Some “big box” stores will be open holiday hours: Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain, The Home Depot, Kmart, Lowes, Menards, PetSmart, Toys R Us, Walmart.

Other retailers will remain closed on Easter Sunday: Academy Sports + Outdoors, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Big Lots, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Burlington Coat Factory, Cabela’s, Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, IKEA, Kohl’s, Office Depot, Office Max, Old Navy, Ross Dress for Less, Sam’s Club, SkopKo, Staples, Target, Trader Joes. .

Because many chain restaurants and bars are franchise operations, hours and open/closed status will vary by location.

Most movie theaters and cinemas are open.

Nearly all casinos and other gaming facilities will be open.

Liquor stores may or may not be open. State and local laws regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages (liquor, beer, and wine) on Easter Sunday and other holidays vary by location.

Recreation centers are likely closed.

Trash and garbage will not be collected in most areas. Collection will proceed on holiday schedule.

Parking meters are not enforced on Easter Sunday in many locations.

Buses, trains, subways, and other public transportation may not be running or will run on holiday schedule.

Enjoy your Easter holiday!
