Straight Talk, the prepaid cell phone service owned by TracFone and sold by Walmart offers a new way to take advantage of their services: Bring Your Own Phone. Now, you can purchase a Straight Talk SIM card for $14.95 and use it on any compatible or unlocked GSM phone. GSM phones are those used by AT&T and T-Mobile. (Verizon Wireless and Sprint phones will not work with this program since they do not utilize SIM cards.)

The SIM card costs $14.99 and includes free shipping. Both regular and micro SIM cards are available. Your monthly cost is $45.00 for 30 days of unlimited talk, text, and data. This is the same price as an unlimited plan with a phone purchased from Straight Talk. Keep your phone and your phone number while saving money every month!

The Straight Talk SIM card will only work with an AT&T or T-Mobile compatible or unlocked GSM phone. To activate your service, you will need a Straight Talk Unlimited 30-day Service Plan card or credit card. Some data services may not be available with all wireless devices. BlackBerrys and branded TracFone, SafeLink, NET10 or Straight Talk phones will not work with this program. In order for your phone’s data services to work, you must update your APN data settings, also called the Access Point Name. SIM card and Service Plan are not refundable.

For $45, you receive unlimited talk, text, and data, again over a 30 day period. Both of these plans are easy to understand and afford. You don’t need to purchase an extra data package or plan in order to use your Smart Phone on the Straight Talk service.

Straight Talk advertises “Nationwide Coverage on one of America’s Best Networks.” Officially, they won’t tell you which network they use. But if you look closely at the coverage map and the wording used in their promotional literature, it’s VERY similar to that used by one of the ‘Big 3′ national providers. Draw your own conclusion here.

An unlimited plan with data with the major national carriers will run you about $90 per month + taxes. At $45, Straight Talk is half as much with no contract and no activation fees to boot. Walmart is currently running a package promotion where some phones are as low as $40 and include your first 30 days of unlimited service. At this price, it’s hard to turn down.
