Don’t get too used to that Netflix $9.99 monthly unlimited DVD rental and streaming combo plan. It’s going away. Soon.
Netflix announced today they are restructuring their subscription plans by separating DVD rental and streaming services. Each plan will now cost $7.99 per month. Sure, you can still get both, but it will cost you double: $15.98 per month. That’s a 60% increase over the old $9.99 combo rate.
This comes on the heels of a 25% rate increase just this past November. At that time, the unlimited plan added DVDs by mail and increased in price from $7.99 to $9.99.
Will Netflix’s 24 million subscribers accept the 60% markup for the DVD and streaming combo service? Time will tell. And how will this affect Netflix’s competitors, mainly Redbox and Blockbuster Express “Bluebox”? Stay tuned.
