What’s Open & Closed on Labor Day

Wondering what is open and what is closed on Labor Day? You’re not alone! Here’s a quick list of what is open and closed on Monday, September 4, 2017:

Most government offices will be closed. This includes federal, state, county, and city offices. Post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered on Labor Day. Most public buildings such as libraries are closed or may be open only for limited hours.

Most banks will be closed.

Stock markets will be closed.

Most public and private schools will be closed. This includes primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities.

SOME UPS Stores will be open while others will be closed. UPS observes the Labor Day holiday, so there will be no pickups or deliveries on September 4.

Most shopping malls and shopping centers will be open holiday hours. This includes the anchor stores typically found in malls: Belk, Bergners, Bloomingdale’s, Bon-Ton, Boscov’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard’s, Elder-Beerman, Gordmans, Herberger’s, JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sears, Younkers. Several stores will be featuring Labor Day sales with deals, discounts, and special promotions.

Most supermarkets and grocery stores will be open holiday hours: A&P, Albertsons, ALDI, Baker’s, BI-LO, Carrs, Cashwise/Coborn’s, Cub Foods, Dillons, Food4Less, Food City, Food Lion, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Genuardi’s, Gerbes, Giant Eagle, H-E-B, Harris Teeter, Hornbacher’s, Hy-Vee, Ingles, Jewel-Osco, King Soopers, Kroger, Meijer, Owens, Publix, QFC, Raley’s, Ralphs, Randalls, Safeway, Save-a-Lot, Shaw’s/Star Market, Sweetbay, Vons, Winn-Dixie.


Most “big box” stores will be open holiday hours: Academy Sports + Outdoors, Barnes & Noble, Bass Pro Shops, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Big Lots, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Burlington Coat Factory, Cabela’s, Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, The Home Depot, IKEA, Kmart, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Menards, Office Depot, Office Max, Old Navy, PetSmart, Ross Dress for Less, Sam’s Club, SkopKo, Staples, Target, Trader Joes, Toys R Us, Walmart.

Your favorite bars and restaurants will be open holiday hours with Labor Day food and drink specials: Applebee’s, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, Bonefish Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Chili’s, Hooters, Logan’s Roadhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, O’Charley’s, Olive Garden, On The Border, Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Red Robin, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Ruby Tuesday, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Texas Roadhouse, T.G.I. Friday’s.

Movie theaters and cinemas are open. Since most kids are out of school, Labor Day is a big movie day. Some cineplexes offer additional early and/or late showings on this day.

Nearly all casinos and other gaming facilities will be open.

Liquor stores and ABC stores may be open or closed. State and local laws regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages (liquor, beer, and wine) on Labor Day and other holidays vary by location.

Recreation centers are likely open.

Trash and garbage collection will proceed on normal schedule in most areas.

Buses, trains, subways, and other public transportation will run, but some locations will be on holiday schedule.

Enjoy the holiday and the unofficial end of summer. Labor Day only comes once per year. For 2017, it happens on Monday, September 4.
