What’s Open & Closed on Good Friday

Wondering what is open and what is closed on Good Friday? You’re not alone! Here’s a quick list of what is open and closed on Good Friday, April 14, 2017:

Government offices will be open. Federal, state, county, and city offices will be open regular business hours. Post offices will be open and mail will be delivered as per normal schedule. UPS will operate on regular schedule with all services available. Public buildings such as libraries have normal hours of operation.

Banks will be open.

Stock markets will be closed.

Some schools will be open. Other schools will be closed since Good Friday falls during their annual Spring Break. This includes primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities. Private schools may be closed on this day.

Most shopping malls and shopping centers will be open normal hours. This includes the anchor stores typically found in malls: Belk, Bergners, Bloomingdale’s, Bon-Ton, Boscov’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard’s, Elder-Beerman, Gordmans, Herberger’s, JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sears, Younkers. Several locations will be featuring Easter week or Easter weekend sales with deals, discounts, and special promotions. The Easter Bunny may even make an appearance at your local mall!

Most supermarkets and grocery stores will be open normal hours: A&P, Albertsons, ALDI, Baker’s, BI-LO, Carrs, Cashwise/Coborn’s, Cub Foods, Dillons, Food4Less, Food City, Food Lion, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Genuardi’s, Gerbes, Giant Eagle, H-E-B, Harris Teeter, Hornbacher’s, Hy-Vee, Ingles, Jewel-Osco, King Soopers, Kroger, Meijer, Owens, Publix, QFC, Raley’s, Ralphs, Randalls, Safeway, Save-a-Lot, Shaw’s/Star Market, Sweetbay, Vons, Winn-Dixie.

Most “big box” stores will be open normal hours: Academy Sports + Outdoors, Barnes & Noble, Bass Pro Shops, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Big Lots, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Burlington Coat Factory, Cabela’s, Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, The Home Depot, IKEA, Kmart, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Menards, Office Depot, Office Max, Old Navy, PetSmart, Ross Dress for Less, Sam’s Club, SkopKo, Staples, Target, Trader Joes, Toys R Us, Walmart.

Your favorite restaurants and bars will be open normal hours on Good Friday: Applebee’s, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, Bonefish Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Chili’s, Hooters, Logan’s Roadhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, O’Charley’s, Olive Garden, On The Border, Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Red Robin, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Ruby Tuesday, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Texas Roadhouse, T.G.I. Friday’s.

Movie theaters and cinemas are open.

Casinos and other gaming facilities will be open.

Liquor stores and ABC stores are usually open.

Recreation centers are likely open.

Trash and garbage collection will proceed on normal schedule in most areas.

Buses, trains, subways, and other public transportation will run as normal.

In summary, nearly everything will be open with normal hours of operation on April 14, 2017. Although Good Friday is a major religious holiday for Christians, it is not a legal holiday such as Christmas Day or the 4th of July. Of course, this assumes you’re in the United States.

In Canada, Good Friday is a national statutory holiday. Government offices are closed. Whether stores are open or closed depends on which province you’re located in. As a general rule, stores and shopping malls in these provinces are allowed to be OPEN on Good Friday: Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Yukon. Most stores and shopping centers in these provinces must remain CLOSED on Good Friday: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island. There are some exceptions, so be sure to check locally before venturing out to the stores. Happy Good Friday 2017, everyone!
