What’s Open & Closed on Canada Day

Wondering what is open and what is closed on Canada Day Long Weekend? You’re not alone! Here’s a quick list of what is open and closed on Saturday, July 1, 2017:

Most government offices will be closed. Federal, provincial, and city offices will be closed. Post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered on Canada Day. Most public buildings such as libraries, immigration and unemployment centres will be closed.

Most banks will be closed.

Stock markets will be closed.

Most public and private schools will be closed. This includes primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities.

Trash and garbage will not be collected on Canada Day in some areas. Typically, collection will resume on Monday, July 3.

Liquor stores and beer stores are closed in many areas. Provincial and local regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages (liquor, beer, and wine) on Canada Day and other holidays vary by location. In Ontario, LCBO stores will be closed. But in Manitoba, most Liquor Marts will be open from noon to 6:00PM.

Some shopping malls and shopping centers will be open while others will be closed on Canada Day. In Toronto, Vaughan Mills, Square One (Mississauga), Bramalea City Centre, and Toronto Eaton Centre will be open.

Some supermarkets and grocery stores will be open while others are closed.

Some “big box” stores such as Canadian Tire, Costco, Walmart, Rona, Kent Building Supplies, Sears, Best Buy, and Home Depot will be closed.

Some bars and restaurants will be open on Canada Day while others are closed. Call ahead to confirm your favorite venue is open before heading out.

Many movie theatres and cinemas are open. Since the kids are out of school, Canada Day is a big movie day. Some cineplexes offer additional early and/or late showings on this day.

Most casinos and other gaming facilities will be open.

Recreation centers are likely open.

Buses, trains, subways, and other public transportation will run, but some locations will be on Sunday or holiday schedule.

In summary, some private businesses observe Canada Day with special hours of operation or close for the holiday while others do not. Government entities are nearly always closed on Canada Day.

Oh, and don’t miss the fireworks! After dark, fireworks shows will be held in many cities.
