Mark Seger’s name comes up every 6-12 months on the local Minnesota radio gossip board. Regardless of what you think about him personally, Mark Seger aka Steve Shannon was a damn good jock back in the day. I grew up listening to him at night on 15/KSTP and then on Stereo 101 (KDWB-FM) in the Twin Cities.
This is the 11PM-12AM hour of Mark’s show from November 16, 1981. I recorded it when I was 17, using my Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10-element FM yagi pointed right at the IDS transmitter from my location in Apple Valley, Technics cassette deck, and a fresh TDK cassette. The audio quality is therefore excellent. If you listen closely, you can even hear some record pops and clicks.
For those who don’t know, Stereo 101 was a hell of a station. Airstaff included Hal Hoover, Jack Hicks, Mark Seger, Pam McManus, Steve Oliver, and Chris Edmonds’ “Morning Sickness.” The PD was a young Dave Hamilton. They did very well against KQ, even beating them a few times in the key ratings demos. It was what most of us guys who went to high school in the early 1980s listened to.
